Why Does My Pool Turn Green?

Are you wondering why your pool turns green?

Is it because of algae or bacteria?

This common problem affects all pool owners. Possible causes include algae, microorganisms, dirt, and lack of chlorine. Ideally, your swimming pool should be crystal clear, with light blue water. Without proper maintenance, it will turn green. Thus, it’s important to check water quality and clean your pool regularly.

What Causes a Green Swimming Pool?

Swimming pools can turn green for various reasons. In general, it happens because of bacteria, algae, clogged filters, dirt, sweat, and heavy rains. Sometimes, its green color can indicate the presence of E. coli and other harmful bacteria. If water doesn’t circulate properly, your pool can turn green. Lack of chlorine may contribute to this issue as well. Other possible causes include:

• Calcium build up
• Poor filtration
• A faulty chlorinator
• Low pump running time
• Not enough free chlorine in the water
• Improperly balanced pH
• Damaged pump system

Most times, pool water turns green due to a combination of factors. If you don’t take care of your pool for two or three weeks, you can expect this to happen. The only way to prevent this problem is to thoroughly clean your pool at least once a week.

How to Fix a Green Swimming Pool

The first thing you should do for fixing a green swimming pool is to test the chlorine and pH levels in the water. Use a chemical test kit for this purpose. The pH should be around 7.2 -7.4. Secondly, add chlorine to maintain proper sanitation levels. Don’t forget to check the circulation and filtration systems.

Brush the floor and walls every week. Use chlorine shock to kill algae.

Do not mix pool chemicals!

Read the labels carefully to make sure you’re using appropriate doses. To prevent damage, always add chlorine tablets to a bucket of water instead of throwing them directly into the pool.
